Exhibition Open Call
In conjunction with Malaysia's 69th Independence Day on 31 August 2026, Leica Akademie Malaysia invites photographers of all backgrounds to share their personal interpretation of Merdeka.
Freedom means different things to different people. It may be found in a place, a person, a moment, a memory, a community, or a quiet expression of self.
We invite you to submit one photograph that answers a simple question:
"What does Merdeka mean to you as a photographer?"
Submission Requirements
- Open exclusively to photographers using Leica cameras.
- Each participant may submit a maximum of three (3) photographs.
- Original photograph taken by the participant.
- Image must include complete metadata (EXIF data).
- Include a short written description (50–100 words).
- Basic adjustments are permitted (exposure, colour, contrast, cropping).
- AI-generated images are not permitted.

Submission Format
- JPEG format
- Long edge: 5000 pixels minimum
- Embedded metadata required
- File name format: Name_TitleOfPhotograph.jpg

12 selected photographs will be exhibited at Leica Store Kuala Lumpur as part of the MERDEKA 69 Exhibition.
Honourable Mentions will be showcased through projection using Leica Cine Play during exhibition-related presentations and events.
Copyright & Usage Rights
Photographers retain full copyright ownership of their submitted images.
By submitting an image, photographers grant Leica Akademie Malaysia a non-exclusive, royalty-free licence to use the submitted work for:
- Exhibition and display purposes
- Promotional materials related to the MERDEKA 69 project
- Leica Akademie Malaysia publications
- Leica Akademie Malaysia websites and social media platforms
All usage will be strictly non-commercial in nature, and appropriate credit will be given to the photographer wherever reasonably possible.
Leica Akademie Malaysia will not sell, license, or commercially exploit submitted images without obtaining separate written permission from the photographer.
