Narratives in Focus 2025

Lai Wai Kuan (b. 2000) is a Malaysian photographer working full-time in a commercial studio. Her practice moves between documentary, diaristic, commercial, architectural and fashion photography, grounded in the intersection of the personal and the observed.Her current project explores memory and emotion through moments of solitude and tenderness, guided by sincerity, stillness, and the quiet fragments of everyday life.

Serene Lai (b. 1997) is a self-taught hobbyist photographer from Sarawak, drawn to quiet spaces and the subtleties of everyday life. In Things the Fire Carries, she documents the transformation of familiar streets during the Hungry Ghost Festival, where devotion, memory, and community intersect. Through her work, she seeks to preserve Sarawak’s rich culture and the stillness embedded in everyday life.

Zaiyani (b. 1999) is a photographer whose documentary and street work explores culture and identity, capturing moments that reflect both her roots and the diverse communities she encounters. Her project, Last Summer at Grandma Synbat’s, documents a childhood summer in the mountains of Kyrgyzstan, where children reconnect with their heritage through their grandmother’s traditional nomadic life. She is driven by stories that bridge modernity and tradition, preserving the ways of life that shape us.

Wong Mei Yin (b. 1991) is a visual storyteller and hobbyist photographer from Kuala Lumpur. Her project, Homecoming, documents her mother’s long-awaited return to Penang Island, blending portraiture, street scenes, and intimate family moments. The work reflects the warmth, resilience, and spirit of a hometown often remembered but seldom witnessed. Mei Yin finds joy in capturing authentic moments and connecting with people from all walks of life.

Wendy Ong (b. 1958) is a Malaysian photographer whose work combines documentary storytelling with the quiet poetry of everyday life. Influenced by 20 years of Chinese calligraphy and brush painting, her practice emphasizes rhythm, composition, and simplicity.Her project, Bittersweet Legacy, is a six-year documentary on traditional coffee roasting in Klang, Selangor, capturing artisans’ skill, dedication, and the emotional and cultural weight of inherited craft, reflecting memory, identity, and community heritage.

Mawar Qamarun (b. 1984) is a Klang-based photographer and former journalist (2008–2013) who has been actively exploring street photography since 2023. She uses weekends to capture everyday moments, telling honest stories from the city’s hidden corners and back alleys. Her current project, Narrative In Focus, created with Women Photographers Malaysia (WPM) and Leica Store Malaysia, highlights strong, resilient women whose lives shape the streets.

Norarsikin Maakim (b. 1973) is a Malaysian photographer whose work explores the fragile intersections of humanity, environment and emotion. Guided by empathy, she reveals quiet truths, strength, grief and resilience often overlooked. In Life Journey – Behind Her Door, she documents an elderly woman in Kampung Baru who has lost her husband and four sons, now living alone on her son’s SOCSO pension. The project bears witness to unspoken loss and enduring grace.

Faith H’ng Lee Khim (b. 1977) is a Malaysian self-taught photographer whose work focuses on candid, unposed street moments, expressions, and emotion. Her project, A Heritage Village, is a visual documentary series on a 150-year-old heritage building and its surrounding neighbourhood, highlighting its historical significance and enduring role in the community. She is passionate about street photography and the pursuit of candid, decisive moments

Nhitrisya Yuvendran (b. 2006) is a Malaysian visual storyteller who captures overlooked moments of everyday life. With a focus on human connection and emotion, her work reflects an interest in social realities and the quiet resilience of ordinary people. Her project, Faces Behind the Work: Lives on the Margins of Malaysia, documents migrant workers at TTDI Market, highlighting dignity within labour. She is driven by storytelling that reveals empathy, endurance, and humanity in daily routines

Suriyanita Sidek (b. 1986) is the Founder, Lead Photographer and Creative Director of GA Creative Production, with two decades of experience in advertising, event and corporate photography and videography. She trains SMEs in mobilegraphy and serves as an Industry-Based Lecturer at Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI). Her recent project, My Pillar of Strength, is a black-and-white photographic narrative honouring the resilience of her mother and the quiet support of her father as caretaker
