CAPTURING ALULA'S ANCIENT OASIS CITY THROUGH THE LENS

Calvin Courjon with the Leica SL2 and Vario-Elmarit 24-70mm lens.

A 23 years old French photographer based in Paris, Calvin Courjon's journey into photography began at a tender age of 10, driven by a deep passion for capturing the beauty of cars he encountered on the streets of Paris. Initially a hobby, photography gradually evolved into Calvin's full-time profession.

Calvin primarily focuses on photographing a wide range of cars, including classic cars, race cars, and supercars, but also immerses himself in capturing mesmerizing travel images whenever he has the opportunity to travel.

During his recent trip to Saudi Arabia, Calvin had the opportunity to explore the remarkable city of Al Ula, an ancient oasis located in the Medina region, capturing the awe-inspiring landscapes that were largely untouched by human intervention. One of the prominent locations Calvin visited was Hegra, which stands as the largest preserved site representing the ancient Nabataean civilization. Dating back to the period preceding the 1st millennium BCE, this historical site was officially recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2008.

"For this trip, I brought my Leica Q2 and my Leica SL2 with a 24-70mm f/2.8 lens. I think it’s a great combination because the Q2 allowed me to have a very nice depth of field with blurry foregrounds and to move light with no bag, especially when the heat was at its highest in the middle of the day.

The SL2 with the 24-70mm f/2.8 lens was the more versatile camera. I recently acquired that camera, so this trip was my first full project with it. And I immediately loved it.

I was very impressed by the way the camera films, it is incredibly stable even handheld. This is very convenient when I want to be light and not carry a Gimbal for example, which is often my case. The built quality of the camera is great, feels very robust. As I was already used to the Q2 that I own since one year and a half, it’s easy to understand the SL2 as it is pretty similar in the way it works."

"One thing I love about Leica cameras are the depth of colors. There is so much to discover when you edit and it gives a very nice look."
