14 Nov | FROM PHOTOGRAPHS TO PUBLICATION: Editing, Sequencing, and Making a Photo Zine

A hands-on workshop guiding photographers through editing, sequencing and transforming a body of images into a printed photo zine. Participants will develop a structured photographic sequence and produce a physical publication prototype by the end of the session.

Part 1: Looking at Photographic Publications (45 min)
A short introduction to photobooks, zines, and artist publications.
Topics:
- Why photographers make books
- Different publication formats
- Examples of photo-books and zines
- How sequencing, pacing, and material choices shape the reading experience

Part 2: Editing & Sequencing Images (1.5 hours)
Participants review and organise their photographs into a coherent series.
Topics:
- Selecting key images
- Removing redundant images
- Creating visual flow and hierarchy
- Explore image relationships. repetition and transitions
- Building narrative, mood and rhythm
Exercise:
- Layout images physically
- Experiment with different sequences

Part 3: Sequencing Strategy & Structure (30 mins)
Participants define the structure of their publication before layout.
Focus:
- Determining sequence logic (linear, thematic or visual)
- Identifying opening, transition and closing images
- Mapping narrative flow across the publication
Outcome:
A clear structural plan for the zine.

Part 4: Making a Dummy (1.5 hours)
Participants transform their sequence into a physical publication.
Topics:
- Choosing a publication format
- Pagination (relationship between image and page)
- Basic layout principles (how images interact across spreads)
- Cover design fundamentals
Exercise:
- Fold, Cut, Tape and assemble a prototype
- Test sequence across pages and spreads

Part 5: Review & Production Sharing (45-60mins)
Discussion of practical production considerations.
Topics:
- Paper choices
- Printing methods
- Small-run publishing
- Distribution and sharing strategies

Each participant presents their work (5-10 mins) followed by group feedback and discussion.

Pre-Workshop Requirements

Participants must arrive with:
- A completed or in-progress series (20-80 images)
- Digital access to all files
- Optional printed set for physical sequencing
(No shooting or image editing will take place during the workshop).
