Join National Geographic Explorer and documentary photographer Ian Teh for a three-day immersive journey through the unique fishing village of Pulau Ketam. Designed for photographers seeking to deepen their visual awareness, this workshop explores the art of observation, timing, and storytelling beyond technical mastery. Working alongside Ian in the field, participants will learn to recognise meaningful moments, build compelling narratives, and respond intuitively to the ever-changing life of the streets. An invitation to slow down, look closer, and create photographs with lasting meaning.

WORKSHOP AGENDA

FRIDAY, 23rd Oct 2026

Evening :

4:00 PM : Meet at South Port Passenger Terminal, Port Klang.
4:30 PM : Take the 4:30pm ferry together from Port Klang > Pulau Ketam.
5:30 PM : Check in at Pulau Ketam D'island Beds & Cafe.
7:00 PM : Welcome Steamboat Dinner by the homestay (cost included).
9:00 PM : After-dinner brief & sharing session.
10:30 PM : Rest.

SATURDAY, 24th Oct 2026

Morning :

7:30 AM : Breakfast at stalls along Jalan Satu.
8:30 AM : Shoot location / activity - Recce walk and shoot @ Jalan Satu, the jetty, morning views, pier.

Afternoon :

12:00 PM : Rest & Lunch at restaurants along Jalan Besar.
1:30 PM : Shoot location / activity - Life along the streets, shops and bridges of Pulau Ketam.
4:30 PM : Rest & Tea / Coffee / Cendol at restaurants along Jalan Besar.

Evening :

5:30 PM : Shoot location / activity - Sunset at Pulau Ketam.
7:00 PM : Dinner at restaurants / cafes along Jalan Besar.

Night :

8:00 PM : Shoot location / activity - Night walk (subject to weather conditions).
10:30 PM : Rest.

SUNDAY, 25th Oct 2026

Morning :

8:30 AM (TBC) : Breakfast - By homestay (cost covered).
10:00 AM : Pack and check-out.
11:30 PM : Depart via 11:30 PM ferry from Pulau Ketam > Port Klang.

Things To Note:
Accommodation is included. A welcome steamboat dinner for the first night (Friday), and breakfast on the last morning (Sunday) are included, and served by the homestay. All else are on participants own cost.

About the Photographers

Ian Teh is a Malaysian-born, British documentary photographer based in Kuala Lumpur. His practice of over three decades has been shaped by a profound appreciation of the world around us and a deep concern for its continuity. He is currently a National Geographic Explorer photographer.

Spanning Asia, Europe, and North America, his portfolio weaves compelling visual narratives, with key projects addressing pressing environmental, social, and geopolitical issues through his distinctive photographic vision. Ian’s work has been featured in exhibitions in the United States, the United Kingdom, France, China, Spain, Indonesia, and beyond.

Widely recognised and honoured for his achievements, his photographs are held in major museum collections, including LACMA and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. In addition to being published extensively in digital and print media, he has authored three monographs—Undercurrents, Traces, and Confluence.

Ian also leads masterclasses and workshops locally and internationally, sharing lessons distilled from years of field experience with beginner and intermediate photographers. Beyond technical, classroom-driven instruction, he mentors emerging and driven photographers and has served on juries for international photography competitions.
